Affordability and community drive park home popularity, according to new survey
A nationwide survey of UK park home residents by Compass Insurance has uncovered the key reasons behind the growing appeal of park home living, revealing that affordability, ease of maintenance, and strong community bonds are the main factors drawing people to this lifestyle.
The “Park Home Living in the UK” survey, conducted with residents across the country, provides valuable insights into the lifestyle, challenges, and satisfaction levels of those who have chosen park homes over traditional housing.
Why do people choose park homes?
The survey found that affordability and lower running costs compared to traditional houses are the primary reasons people choose park home living. Respondents highlighted the appeal of simplified, single-level living, which proves ideal for retirement and those with health considerations. Many were also drawn to the peaceful rural or seaside locations where park homes are typically situated, as well as the strong sense of community with supportive neighbours that these parks foster.
High satisfaction levels across communities
The majority of respondents reported overwhelmingly positive experiences, with most describing daily life as peaceful and friendly. Residents particularly value the balance between community involvement and personal privacy, noting that whilst neighbours are supportive and helpful, everyone respects each other’s independence and space.
Home improvements reflect long-term commitment
A significant majority of survey participants have made modifications to their park homes, demonstrating their commitment to creating comfortable, long-term living spaces. The most popular upgrades include new kitchens and bathrooms, which modernise homes and improve functionality.
Many residents have also invested in enhanced insulation and solar panels to improve energy efficiency, whilst others have added porches, decking, and sunrooms to extend their living areas. Additional improvements frequently mentioned include double glazing and modern heating systems, reflecting a focus on comfort and reduced running costs.
Energy efficiency and value confirmed
Most respondents confirmed that park homes are energy-efficient and cost-effective, particularly when well-insulated and properly upgraded. The survey found that the majority also believe park homes offer good value for money, providing a comfortable lifestyle at a fraction of traditional housing costs. This positive assessment holds especially true for those who purchased at reasonable prices and have invested in energy-saving improvements.
Strong community spirit enhances lifestyle
Social connections emerged as a major benefit of park home living, with many parks organising regular events including coffee mornings, bingo sessions, BBQs, and seasonal gatherings. Residents appreciate these opportunities for social engagement whilst maintaining their independence, creating a lifestyle that combines community living with personal freedom.
Expert advice for prospective buyers
Survey participants overwhelmingly emphasised the importance of thorough research before purchasing, including checking park rules, speaking with current residents, and commissioning specialist surveys. They also recommend understanding all costs, such as pitch fees and resale charges, and using solicitors experienced in park home transactions.
Kevin Minnear, Head of Underwriting at Compass Insurance, commented: “This survey provides some fascinating insights into the park home lifestyle and confirms what we’ve observed in our customer base – that park homes offer an attractive, accessible, and affordable living option for many people, particularly those downsizing or entering retirement.
“The findings highlight the importance of proper protection for these homes and the communities they’re part of. We’re pleased to see that so many are enjoying the park home lifestyle and would recommend it to others. Understanding both the benefits and challenges helps us better serve this growing community with tailored insurance solutions – protecting both their homes and their investment.”
Park homes: Meeting demand where bungalows cannot
As park homes offer the benefits of single-story living in a safe and secure community, they are especially suitable for those looking to retire, as well as for people with accessibility needs.
Just 9% of UK housing stock is bungalows, and prices are hitting £335,000+; whereas the average value of a park home is £144,748 – offering the same single-storey benefits at less than half the cost of traditional bungalows. With a major shortage of bungalows in the UK, many over-55s are opting for park home living.
Compass Insurance provides two coverage levels of park home insurance – Essentials and Extra – with the market’s most competitive standard excess rate at just £50, allowing customers to select protection that matches their individual needs.
