Additionally, Ian McIlrath, Managing Director at Ski Solutions, shares his golden rules to snow-sure skiing.
The 15 most snow-sure resorts:
Combining resort altitude and total snowfall between December and April, here are the top 15 snow-sure resorts based on historic data:
Zermatt in Switzerland ranks as the most snow-sure resort, offering an incredible 1,150m of snowfall between the months of December and April, and a skiing altitude of 3,820m. The resort is considered one of the best ski towns in the world, offering incredible scenery and 190km of runs to explore. Zermatt is interconnected with the Italian resort, Cervinia (3rd), offering an additional 160km of runs to explore. This means those attending either resort have access to 350km of pistes.
In second place, Chamonix in France offers the highest skiing altitude of 3,840m, and boasts 837cm of snowfall. The resort is one of the great ancient Alpine capitals and boasts some of the best scenery in the Alps. Chamonix hosts 150km of runs to explore, including 55km of red runs and 41km of black runs for more adrenaline-seeking skiers to explore.
Cervinia in Italy ranks in third, with a strong snowfall of 878cm up until the end of April. The resort also offers a high altitude of 3,480 and guarantees great skiing conditions until the end of the season.
Saas-Fee in Switzerland ranks fourth, with a skiing altitude of 3,500m and is known for being nestled amongst thirteen 4,000m peaks within the Saas Valley. Other resorts to highlight include Les Deux Alpes, France (5th), known for its large, buzzing village and high altitude of 3,570, and Sölden, which is Austria’s only ski resort that made the ranking, boasting a skiing altitude of 3,250m.
The five golden rules for snow-sure skiing:
Skiing on fresh, powdery snow is a thrill like no other—but even the most snow-sure resorts require careful planning to stay safe.
That’s why Ian McIlrath, Managing Director at Ski Solutions, has shared his advice on making the most of your ski holiday while keeping safety at the forefront.
-
Check the Weather.
Ian says, “It’s important to always be aware of the weather conditions ahead of your trip, so you can both prepare for potential poor conditions as well as be aware of any dangers, particularly avalanche alerts. There’s currently an unusually high avalanche risk in the Alps this month, with resorts including La Plagne and Les Arcs even experiencing temporary closures, so stay updated and plan.”
-
Confirm Resort Advisories.
Ian suggests keeping a close eye on information boards or websites, “Staying updated on the resort’s advisories, whether on their website before your trip or at the front desk during your stay, is vital for both staying safe and fully enjoying your trip. You’ll be able to find information on which slopes and lifts are in operation, ski school availability, as well as any safety measures that may currently be in place.”
-
Safety Equipment and Preparation.
Ian says, “Making sure you’re fully prepared with the right clothing and equipment is an essential part of staying safe whilst skiing. Helmets, goggles, gloves, and layered and or thermal clothing are a must. You should never set foot on the mountain without them.”
He adds, “If you’re planning on skiing off-piste, you should also bring an avalanche safety kit, complete with a beacon, probe, and shovel. And don’t forget to always carry sunscreen and some water to keep yourself protected and hydrated.”
-
Ski Responsibly.
Ian says, “When out skiing, it’s important to never stray from marked runs and resort boundaries, as past this point, things can quickly become hazardous. Follow all signs and ski patrol guidance and avoid potentially risky areas during or after heavy snowfall. It’s also a good idea to ski with a partner whenever possible, able to look out for each other and keep each other safe.
-
Check Travel and Emergency Info.
Ian recommends, “As with any holiday, knowing emergency contact numbers and facilities is one of the most important bits of prep you can do. Make a note of local medical facilities, as well as keep contact numbers for the resort saved in your phone and/or written down. And don’t forget to fully charge your mobile phone before heading out, just in case you need to make an emergency call.”
Snow-sure resorts offer spectacular winter experiences, but smart planning ensures these adventures stay safe as well as thrilling.
