Inspired by the hit Netflix series A Man on the Inside, staring Ted Danson, 75-year-old Sheila Everett, and her friend Frances Carr aged 69, are proving that retirement living is indeed full of laughter, camaraderie, and new beginnings. Residents of Magnolia Grange, a vibrant retirement community in Weston-Super-Mare, Frances and Sheila embody the spirit of later-life adventure, forming friendships and leading a lively social scene.

If you think retirement communities are quiet, think again. At Magnolia Grange, life is like an episode of A Man on the Inside every day!

Magnolia Grange is home for both Frances and Sheila who rent apartments through My Future Living. Together, they’ve turned retirement into a celebration of friendship, fun, and finding new purpose.

Sheila moved in 8 years ago and couldn’t be happier with her decision. After living in Hounslow her entire life, she spent years searching for the perfect retirement community. “When I first visited Magnolia Grange, I knew it was where I wanted to be,” Sheila shares. “When an apartment became available, I jumped at the chance, and I’ve never looked back. The assured tenancy is such a relief—it eliminates stress and lets me enjoy life without worries.”

Frances moved to Magnolia Grange in 2019, after losing her husband. “I needed a fresh start,” Frances recalls. “The moment I saw this place; I felt at home.”

Frances and Sheila, who quickly became friends have help to create a warm and inviting atmosphere for everyone in the community. “We’re like the unofficial welcome committee,” Frances laughs. “We make sure new residents feel right at home.”

The parallels with A Man on the Inside are striking. While the show portrays the tight-knit bonds formed in a fictional retirement community, Frances and Sheila are living proof that these stories exist in real life.

Frances and Sheila have become the heart of the community’s bustling social calendar. They organise themed events like 50s and 60s dance nights, host regular fish and chips suppers, and celebrate every occasion from Halloween to New Year’s Eve.

“We’re always looking for an excuse to party,” Frances says. “It’s a laugh, and it keeps us young!” During the warmer months, you’ll find them enjoying summer evenings on the patio, sipping wine and chatting with neighbours. Sheila adds, “We’ve even bought new garden furniture and are looking forward to setting up hedgehog houses in the spring.”

Sheila also takes on responsibilities like organising the annual Christmas meal and running the community’s birthday list, ensuring no one is forgotten. “We have four birthdays in November, so it’s always a busy month with lots of celebrations,” Sheila notes.

Beyond the parties and events, the true heart of Magnolia Grange is its sense of care and support. Residents are always there to help one another, whether it’s picking up groceries for someone who’s unwell or changing a lightbulb. “There’s always someone around to lend a hand,” Sheila says. “It’s that kind of kindness that makes this place so special.”

For those wondering what retirement living is like, Frances and Sheila are living proof that it’s anything but dull. “Retirement isn’t about slowing down—it’s about embracing life,” Frances says. Sheila adds, “If you think it’s going to be quiet, just spend a day at Magnolia Grange where there always something going on.”

Frances and Sheila are rewriting the narrative of retirement, bringing to life their version of Two Women on the Inside—a tale of friendship, fun, and fulfilment in later life.
