Professor Lucy Donaldson, Director of Research at Arthritis UK
“With temperatures set to soar this week, the 10 million people across the UK living with arthritis may notice the hotter weather worsening their symptoms of pain, stiffness and swelling.
A rise in temperature can cause the body to retain extra fluid which will irritate already inflamed joints.
Arthritis UK asked medical professionals what easy lifestyle changes can help people living with arthritis stay comfortable and manage symptoms during a heatwave.
- Exercise
- Gentle exercises will keep blood flowing and reduce inflammation.
- Doctors recommend swimming, yoga, stretching or even moving your legs whilst sat down.
- Exercise should always remain within the individual’s ability to stay active and not go against medical guidance.
- Diet
- Drink water regularly so fluid levels are always topped up. Dehydration can trigger a gout attack.
- Aim to consume less salt – salt makes the body retain extra water and can contribute to swelling.
- Oily fish and Omega-3 can help relieve arthritis symptoms over time as they contain Vitamin E which can have anti-inflammatory properties.
- Sun protection
- Some arthritis medication can make skin more sensitive to sunlight – it is important to always use an SPF that works for your skin type.
- Wear neutral lightweight clothing and stay in the shade when possible.
- Swap hot showers for cold showers and use ice packs on the impacted areas to relieve pain symptoms.
If someone is experiencing severe pain they should reach out to their GP for further help.”
