The Best Luxury Adventures For Mature Travellers

travel-2

Sarah Mansour, Founder at The Travel Edit by Sarah shares her top luxury destinations for mature travellers.

Adventure travel looks very different today than it once did. For mature travellers, luxury adventure is less about ticking countries off their list and more about finding the best experiences whilst not having to give up on comfort.

Whether that means spotting wildlife on safari, taking a private tour through Japan or experiencing the best food and wine in Europe, there are now countless ways to combine adventure with sophistication.

As a luxury travel agent, I’ve worked with hundreds of clients, helping them plan luxury adventures.

Here are some of the destinations that I recommend most frequently to mature travellers looking for something unforgettable.

A luxury safari through Southern Africa

In my opinion, a safari is one of the world’s greatest travel experiences, and today’s luxury lodges make it more comfortable than ever.

Destinations like Botswana, South Africa and Kenya offer beautifully designed camps, private guides and unforgettable wildlife. Many of the itineraries I plan also combine safari with a luxury beach stay in Zanzibar or Mauritius, so you get a bit of R&R afterwards.

Touring Japan in style

Japan is one of my all time favourite destinations. It has everything any traveller could want; culture, food, history and exceptional hospitality.

Luxury small-group tours often include Tokyo, Kyoto and the Japanese Alps, though private tours can offer something more bespoke. Whether you want to try the country’s world-famous food, soak in a private onsen hot spring or experience the incredible history of Japan, it’s a destination that feels adventurous while still being incredibly polished, safe and easy to get around.

A food and wine journey through Italy

Luxury adventure does not always need to involve physical activity…unless you count picking up and pouring multiple bottles of wine!

Private vineyard tours in Italy, truffle hunting in Piedmont and cooking experiences along the Amalfi Coast offer a more relaxed style of adventure focused on food, culture and local traditions.

The region is also host to some of Europe’s most luxury hotels, meaning you can enjoy beautiful views, delicious food and a relaxing atmosphere, without having to travel too far from home.

Discovering the culture of Vietnam and Cambodia

Vietnam and Cambodia are perfect for mature travellers wanting a rich cultural experience.

Think luxury river cruises, private food tours, boutique hotels and guided visits to ancient temples like Angkor Wat.

Whilst many areas of Vietnam and Cambodia can be quite rural and rough and rough around the edges, the best tours allow you to experience the best of both, without forgoing your comforts.

When it comes to the tours I help organise, the pace can easily be tailored based on what you want, making it ideal for travellers wanting adventure without exhaustion.

Seeing the Galápagos Islands by luxury yacht

The Galápagos Islands are one of the most fascinating wildlife destinations in the world. They really are a bucket list destination.

Luxury small-ship cruises allow travellers to experience giant tortoises, marine iguanas and blue-footed boobies while enjoying elegant cabins, gourmet dining and expert naturalist guides.

The real trick here is making sure you choose the right tour company for you. Many of them offer certain perks online, but finding one that fits what you need can be a bit harder if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

A luxury train journey through Canada

Travel by train has become increasingly popular with mature travellers wanting to see dramatic landscapes without the stress of constant flights or transfers.

Likewise, for those that love mountains but aren’t able to hike, train travel can be a great way to enjoy nature.

Journeys through the Canadian Rockies aboard luxury trains combine panoramic mountain views with fine dining and beautifully designed suites. Not to mention, it’s a great way to see more of the country, without having to worry about winding roads or catching buses.

Private yacht hopping around the Greek Islands

For travellers who prefer slow luxury, island hopping around Greece offers the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration.

Private yacht charters and luxury catamarans mean you can take life at your own pace, discover new islands, find hidden beaches and eat at authentic tavernas away from the busiest tourist crowds.

Morocco and Jordan for history lovers

From the souks of Marrakech to the rose-red city of Petra, these destinations combine culture, history and dramatic scenery.

Luxury riads, private touring and high-end desert camps make both Morocco and Jordan far more comfortable and accessible than many travellers expect. However, the cities in these countries can be very hectic, so finding a place that gives you a good balance of location and relaxation is important.

Not to mention, the right guide can make all the difference.

Wildlife and wellness in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a great destination for travellers wanting a softer style of adventure, whilst still marvelling at nature.

Luxury eco-lodges, rainforest wildlife experiences, birdwatching tours and wellness retreats create a perfect balance between exploration and relaxation. Not to mention, it’s one of the safest countries in the Americas, meaning you can soak up that central American culture, without worrying about getting around.

Cruising through the Norwegian Fjords

For breathtaking scenery without intense activity, a luxury fjord cruise is hard to beat.

Travellers can experience dramatic landscapes, charming Nordic towns and exceptional dining while travelling comfortably through some of Europe’s most spectacular natural scenery.

Finding the right operator is a key piece of the puzzle here, so working with a luxury travel agent can make all the difference.
