Picky Bits Choking Warning Issued as Summer Grazing Trend Sweeps UK
As picky bits fever sweeps across the UK this summer, filling supermarket shelves and covering buffets, picnic tables and garden parties with plates of cheese, crackers, olives, sweets, sausages and crisps, LifeVac Europe® is calling for a moment of caution amid the grazing.
With an ambulance taking around eight minutes to reach an incident in the UK, and brain damage potentially occurring within just four minutes when someone’s airway is blocked, the manufacturer of these noninvasive airway clearance devices is urging people to understand basic first aid.
The company does not want to be a party pooper, but says the relaxed way we enjoy picky bits, often while talking, laughing, drinking and dancing, can turn a casual gathering into a medical emergency within seconds.
Eric Banagan, Founder and Managing Director of LifeVac Europe®, said: “Picky bits are one of the biggest food trends of summer 2026 because they’re easy to prepare, super sociable and perfect for making the most of the sunny weather we’re experiencing. We don’t want to take the fun or memories away from anyone, but these scenarios can create a very real risk to life. We want people to be prepared not only with their platters, but also with their first aid provisions.
“While many of us think about whether food has been left out in the heat for too long, or whether the best-before date is looming, choking is a safety risk that is rarely talked about or fully understood. People are often grazing while talking, laughing, joking around and enjoying a drink. We simply want to flag that if a picky bit becomes lodged in someone’s throat, action needs to be taken, and fast.”
With LifeVac® devices having saved more than 6,320 lives around the world, many recent incidents involving people of all ages have been caused by foods such as crisps, sweets, fruit, hot dogs and pretzels, all of which can feature in a picky bits feast.
Lewis Steeper, Co-Founder of The Oliver Steeper Foundation, commented: “For families, summer should be about memories, not tragedy. We know first-hand that a normal day can turn into an emergency in seconds, and we want people to have the confidence and knowledge to protect their loved ones if disaster does strike.”
Quick Tips for Safe Summer Grazing
Eat Sitting Down: Avoid grazing while walking, running or playing, and encourage children to do the same.
Supervise and Adapt: Keep a close eye on young children and older people, and cut high-risk picky bits such as whole grapes, cherry tomatoes and sausages lengthways.
Be Prepared: Learn the difference between gagging and choking, and ensure you have the right equipment on hand to act immediately if disaster strikes.
Stay Cool Safely: Avoid giving ice cubes to children under five, as these can pose a significant choking hazard.
Eric concluded: “Choking can happen to anyone, at any age, and within seconds and because time is of the essence, it pays to be prepared. We are not telling people to stop enjoying picky bits, but we are asking them to slow down, chew properly, look out for others and know what to do if someone starts choking.”
LifeVac® should only be used when standard choking first aid has failed or cannot be performed and more information can be seen at www.lifevac.uk
